The original lesson text, exercises, rendered diagrams, and illustrations are © Yurii M., licensed CC BY-SA 4.0: share and adapt them, keep the credit, keep the license. That grant does not cover the website's source code or the third-party assets below.

The website itself

The source code of this website is © Yurii M., all rights reserved, including the course machinery built from the ground up for this course: the simulated machines and their shells, the Nix evaluator and option checker, the editor tooling, the exercises' checking, and the artwork drawn for them. It is not published during the beta.

That is where the beta stands, rather than a decision made forever.

Software this page ships

All of it under the MIT license, each piece keeping its own.

• CodeMirror and @replit/codemirror-vim, for the editors.
• Solid inside Astro, three.js
• The tree-sitter runtime and four grammars compiled to WebAssembly, one each for Nix, Bash, JSON and YAML, built from the grammars packaged in nixpkgs.
• giscus, for the discussion under each lesson.

Nix material this page ships

• Sixty files of nixpkgs lib and its maintainer lists, shipped as source, unchanged, so lib evaluates here as it does on your machine.
• Option names, types and defaults from nixpkgs and Home Manager. Both MIT, pinned to the revisions in nixpkgs-meta.json.

Artwork

• NixOS snowflake. “NixOS Logo” by Simon Frankau, Tim Cuthbertson, and Daniel Baker, from NixOS branding, CC BY 4.0. The installer scenes use it unchanged. The course map shows a modified version of the same logo, recoloured to this site's palette and outlined, by Yurii M. under the same terms and not endorsed by the NixOS project.

• Calamares timezone map, © 2014 Teo Mrnjavac, carried unchanged as a separate work under GPL-3.0-or-later, as upstream publishes it.

Ubuntu Sans under the Ubuntu Font Licence 1.0, cut down to the characters used here. JetBrains Mono under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, as published, with a Nerd Fonts glyph subset for terminal glyphs. Material Symbols and Material Design Icons under Apache 2.0. Simple Icons under CC0 1.0; those marks remain trademarks of their owners.

Names

The GNOME, Calamares, and GRUB interfaces here are code-native recreations; the course ships no screenshots or GNOME logo. GNOME® is a registered trademark of the GNOME Foundation. Nix, NixOS, GNOME, Calamares, GRUB, and their marks belong to their respective projects. They identify the software being taught; this course is not affiliated with or endorsed by those projects.
